I was given the opportunity to illustrated the book cover of Felix The Railway Cat. It's a book about a cat named Felix who is one of the most important employee in Huddersfield Station.
Sketch and Rough Color Options
The first option is based on the originally published book which includes Felix's photo
at the station for the front cover and a worker's table for the back cover.
In this case, I try making it look like Felix's own table, though he uses it only to sleep on.
As this book is about Felix's stories which are based on a true story. For the second option,
I felt making the book look like a diary would be fitting, so it's like a personally written journal or
even a biography. The book cover is filled with elegant ornaments and objects relating to the story,
like a rat, pigeon, whistle and train tickets.
The third option is more of Felix in action, working in the station. The front cover being in the station, patrolling through the people, strutting and working at the same time, whereas the back cover
is Felix working from behind the desk, manning train flyers and brochures.
Final artwork
The second option was chosen for the final design. I felt the sketch was too empty, so I added more ornaments and objects related to the stories as well; Felix's vest and his special door.
